How to Deal with a Padlock That Won't Budge

When you last moved home, you may have chosen to downsize and live in a smaller property. Yet, perhaps you did not have enough room for all of your possessions and opted to use a large container for storage purposes instead. Fast forward a few months or more, and you may have tried to gain access to the container to pull out some of your possessions, but you've encountered a significant problem. For some reason you couldn't open the padlock on the door and would need to find some way around this, but what could you do?

Quite a Problem

One thing is for sure, you won't be able to access this container by some other means and will need to remove the padlock before you can open the door. As the padlock would have been, theoretically, the weakest part of the whole setup, you made sure that you bought a very sturdy lock at the outset. This may be unfortunate, but you would rather not try to break your expensive acquisition, so is there any other way to get around it?

Lubricating and Cleaning

You can try lubricating and cleaning the lock to see whether exposure to the elements has caused it to jam up in some way. As you may know, there are products available at your local hardware store that can help you deal with corrosion and that may also be able to get rid of any other impediments that are jamming the lock itself.

Picking

If you are particularly adventurous and don't mind spending some time studying online videos, you may be able to work out how to use picks or shims to try and spring the lock open. This is a lot harder than you might think, and your success may be down to pure luck, but it's one idea to consider.

Drilling and Cutting

Expensive locks like this are made to last and are set up to resist any brute force attempts to open them. They will be reinforced, and you might find it very difficult to drill out the casing of the lock to try and gain access. Likewise, you may find it very difficult to cut through the shackle, and it may be difficult to get a purchase in any case, due to the way that the lock is protected.

Professionals at Work

All things considered, a good approach is to get in touch with a locksmith. Certainly, you can try to free up the workings of the lock by using that proprietary spray, but if this doesn't work, then you can bring in the professionals to help.
